Alexi Kenney, 16, is the 2010 Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition Senior Grand Prize Winner. In October 2009 he appeared on the National Public Radio show From the Top, in which he played Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango. Alexi was a member of the Luna Trio at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division; in 2009, the trio reached the semifinals at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In 2008 Alexi won first prize in the Bay Area American String Teachers Association competition. In 2007 he performed at the Flint Center with the El Camino Youth Symphony, as winner of their annual concerto competition. Alexi’s summers have been devoted to studying chamber music. Earlier this summer he studied and performed at the Beethoven Institute at Mannes College in New York City and also at Yellow Barn in Vermont. He participated in the Music@Menlo Chamber Music Institute for five summers (2003 – 2008) and will return there again this summer. In the summer of 2009 he attended the Heifetz International Music Institute. Since 2007 Alexi has been assistant concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.; he has twice toured Europe. He has performed in many public master classes and gives frequent solo and chamber recitals. Alexi began playing the violin at age 4 and currently studies with Wei He at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division. He is a rising senior at Palo Alto High School.
